Learn a language without ever learning it – I know what you’re thinking right now – “That can never happen”,
“Yeah, right, this is just another ambitious marketing trick”,
“If it was that easy, everybody would do it”.
I know it, because I would think the same! However, at WSA I was talking to a person who asked me:
So what is so unique about Bliu Bliu and how will it make me want to learn a language?
It was one of those lightbulb moments!
I have worked at Bliu Bliu for over a year now and the one thing that keeps me from learning Spanish is TIME. Or if we call things their real names, it’s actually MOTIVATION. I think that I have enough motivation, but in reality, I am not moving to Spain, I don’t have Spanish friends and learning Spanish would be a nice thing to do.
Let me tell you something – this is not real motivation!
So without that real motivation I never get around taking time off my daily activities to say: “right now I am going to learn Spanish”. Instead, I always blame busy lifestyle and that working in a startup eats up all my time!
Well, guess what.
The lightbulb moment made me realise that with Bliu Bliu I don’t need to make that conscious decision during my day to learn Spanish.
Instead, I can read whatever I read every day in Spanish on Bliu Bliu and over time I will naturally acquire Spanish as I did Russian when watching TV while I was a child.
This is where you probably think – “Yeah, like reading news in a language that you want to learn is that easy”, or “Yeah, right, she probably knows a lot of Spanish already”.
And to prove that it works I set myself a challenge:
For 10 days from today I will read at least one article on a subject that matters to me in Spanish. I promise!
SO LETS BEGIN!
I go on Google Translate and find a keyword for what interests me in Spanish.
I search for that keyword on Google >> Go to Google News >> Pick the first article >> Import it into Bliu Bliu
Here we go, I start reading Spanish new:
As you can see, my vocabulary is very poor for this article, however that is fine. This is what I will do:
- Go over the whole text clicking on words that I know and highlighting the words that I don’t know to show Bliu Bliu (and myself) which words I actually know and don’t know
This is how my article looks like right now. Because I know English and some French, I could figure out the meaning of some of the words.
2. Now I will go over the whole article again doing my best to understand the overall meaning without translating anything.
The truth is that this is not a very complicated article, without understanding exact meaning of every word, I can understand that Toyota is planning to re-start it’s operations in Venezuela with low volumes of 100 to 300 car unites produced monthly. The whole thing is still in a process of planning.
3. So now I will translate some words that are really difficult and translate the whole text, in order to find out if what I understood is actually correct.
It turns out that there were couple instances where I misunderstood what was said, however overall, I was pretty on the spot AND I now know +44 words in Spanish!
4. I will read couple more stories suggested by Bliu Bliu to make sure that Bliu Bliu finds out about my level more accurately and I put my Spanish skills at practice.
I won’t lie. At the beginning it’s quite difficult, however in less than 15 minutes, I have figured out that I know 188 words in Spanish, that I can understand news in Spanish and found out some interesting facts about Spain!
As I was clicking away on words that I know and I don’t know, I was showing Bliu Bliu my actual Spanish knowledge becoming more accurate on guessing what content to serve me next.
I am definitely coming back for more tomorrow!
I am sure that I will get into a routine of doing regularly and if this is the holy grail of Spanish – I’m loving it!
So stay tuned! Or better, choose your target language and join me in this challenge!
Because if it works, we won’t have to learn a new language ever again or better, WE WON’T HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION THAT WE ARE GOING TO LEARN A LANGUAGE EVER AGAIN. Instead, we will acquire any new language by fitting it into our daily schedules.
